Do We Need More Chiropractors?

Before deciding on taking out all those huge school loans and setting yourself up for thousands and thousand of dollars in debts it is always wise to do your research about the field of study that you are interested in and whether or not the supply far outweighs the demand. This is especially true of the field of Chiropractors. While chiropractic colleges are pumping out more and more chiropractors each year, the demand for these professional services is growing slowly if at all. This means that there simply may be more chiropractors than there are need for their services.

There are several reasons for this. First, Chiropractors although they have made some head way, have never been considered mainstream medical professionals. This means that many people are reluctant to try their services afraid of losing money on treatments that simply may not work. Second, health care is becoming more and more difficult for the average person to afford and so many simply don’t have the money to spend on what is consider alternative treatments. In fact, many don’t have the money for necessary treatment even when faced with life threatening illnesses so it is unlikely, they will have the money to pay for care that they simply don’t consider as necessary. Third, fewer health insurance companies will pay for chiropractic services, which mean that those who depend on their health insurance to pay for their medical expenses aren’t going to be able to afford health care.

The simple fact is that with health care rising and continuing to rise that most people have to pick the type and amount of health care they receive carefully. This means that more and more people are seeking care more or less on an emergency basis and simply cannot afford the ongoing care that chiropractic care demands. While, visiting a doctor to get prescriptions filled and to monitor health problems may occur every three to six months as a general rule, chiropractors often require weekly or twice weekly visits which means most people simply can’t afford to visit a chiropractor on a regular basis.

When you look at the statistics most chiropractors work for themselves, which means there is no one to share overhead costs which in turn means higher charges for their services which results in even less patients being able to afford these services. Many chiropractors simply don’t have the finances to afford full time offices sometimes resorting to only offering their services a couple days a week, while others are closing their offices altogether.

The truth is at this point the supply of chiropractors offering treatment may well exceed the demand. This means that those just thinking about starting a career in chiropractic medicine should think long and hard before entering the profession.
