Emergency Lipstick Stain Removal

Posted on 30 January 2011

Let’s face it men aren’t renowned for their cleaning skills in the first place so you can imagine an average mans panic when confronted by a lipstick stain that should be on his clothes! Well if you do have such a stain that needs to “vanish” as soon a s possible then you will be relieved to know that there are quite a few household products that you can use to get rid of that incriminating stain. Surely you have one of the following ingredients somewhere in your house. If you don’t I suggest you get on your bike sharpish and get down to your local supermarket.

Two of the most useful ingredients for removing lipstick stains are baking powder and baking soda. Hold on I hear you cry are they the same thing? Well actually, no they’re not, similar but not the same. Baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate while baking powder also includes an acidic agent. Both are excellent in the clear up of many different stains. So for lipstick stain removal you can use backing powder on its own (mixed into a paste with water and applied) or baking soda with lemon juice, where lemon juice provides the acidic element which will help break down the oily lipstick. In the latter scenarios create a paste using the two ingredients and when applied to the stain leave for 30 minutes, wash and then dry in the sunshine. Lemon is a good bleach agent in sunlight.

If you don’t have either baking soda or baking powder then what about hairspray? Oddly enough this seems to work very well on lipstick stains. Spray the hairspray directly onto the stain until it is thoroughly wet and saturated with the stuff. Again leave the spray to do its thing for fifteen minutes before wiping off the spray and hopefully the stain with a damp cleaning cloth.
