Hair Implants – How Do They Work?

A simple fact of life is that all of us are going to have to deal with losing our hair at some point in time. Some of us have receding hairlines, others have thinning all over. No matter in what form hair loss strikes you, it’s never going to be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we can’t do much to prevent it from ever happening. But at least we can do something to reverse the consequences of thinning hair. Many of us have already done so, just have a look at Richard Simmons’ hair transplant. But he’s by no means the only one who has had a transplant performed. Another great example would be David Lee Roth’s hair transplant. I’ve checked out many celebrity hair transplant pictures before I took the plunge myself. I wanted to make sure I had realistic expectations.

What you must absolutely make sure of before going ahead with a surgery such as this, is that you have a full and complete understanding of how it works, why it works and how the surgery is performed. Basically, donor hairs are going to be transplanted to the top of your head, where no more hair is growing. These donors hairs are coming from another part of your head, namely the backside. The follicles in the back of your head are immune to the effects of the hair loss hormone known as DHT. For this reason, once these follicles are transplanted, the hairs will grow forever and never fall out.

Should you choose to proceed with getting a hair transplant, then the donor hair from the back of your head will need to be excised by a qualified surgeon. This strip of hair is then dissected by multiple clinic employees, because this needs to be done quickly. Once the strip is dissected into so called grafts (bits of tissue with only one to four hairs), these grafts can be transplanted into an area where you would like to have more hair. This area has recipient sites created in it with a laser. These recipient sites are tiny wounds in which the grafts will be placed. Once the grafts are in place, hair is going to grow from it in a natural way for the rest of your life!
