More about Getting through Drug Detox

Tags: , ,

If you are trying to get through drug detox after suffering from drug or alcohol addiction, here are some tips that can help you to do so.

* If you are addicted to alcohol, tranquilizers, opiates, or sedative medications, then you should probably seek out a medically approved detox facility in order to help you get through the drug addiction detox.  If you are not sure how dangerous it is to come off of a certain chemical, ask your doctor or call up a local treatment center and ask to be connected to the nurse’s station.  They will tell you quickly if a particular drug poses any detox risks.  For example, coming off of alcohol, Valium, or Barbiturates could all result in serious health complications or even death if the addict is not medically supervised.  There are other drugs that can produce similar results so it pays to ask questions!

* Some drugs for detox do not require any medical attention whatsoever, such as cocaine, crack, or marijuana.  In this case, not knowing this information could cause you to waste money on treatment that you don’t necessarily need, even though you may still benefit from counseling, therapy, meetings, or other forms of addiction treatment.

* Some drugs that are being used for a legit medical condition can still pose an addiction risk.  For example, many people become addicted to painkillers after an injury, and some people with anxiety may suffer from Xanax addiction, especially if they happen to drink while taking their medicine.

* If you go through detox but continue to relapse or return to your drug of choice, then you may need more help than just detox.  Consider getting residential treatment, counseling, group therapy, or going to support meetings outside of treatment.  If you continue to relapse then obviously you need more treatment than what you have tried in the past.  Step up your efforts if you want to see better results.
