You are more likely to see PC errors and slow computer performance if you don’t do a regular PC service. This article steps through simple, and free, activities that any service should include.
It can often be the case when you try to fix PC errors that you discover a product update or system tweak could have resolved the issue. With this in mind the following tasks can help maintain PC performance and reliability if run regularly.
- Start with backing up your data. You should do this daily if you create a lot of critical documents (free tools like SyncToy can help with backups).
- Use Disk Cleanup (accessories / system tools) to remove temporary cached files. Remove unused programs you no longer require. This helps free up space for virtual memory.
- Tweak the virtual memory settings. Do this by checking the page file size is greater than the Windows recommendation (see control panel / system / advanced / performance options).
- Run the Disk Defragmenter tool (accessories / system tools) to improve hard drive reading speeds.
- Use the System Configuration tool’s startup administration section to limit how many services run as Windows is booting up. Run the tool via the start menu / run / enter msconfig. Do not disable your anti-virus software.
- Run Windows Update and install the latest device driver, program and operating system updates. For third party program updates, check the vendor’s site or see if the program has a tools / check for updates menu-item.
- Run your anti-virus software against all disk partitions and external storage. This includes checking USB flash drives which are particularly prone to getting viruses as they are shared amongst PCs.
Preventative attempts to fix PC errors is a great way prolonging the useful life of your computer. Run these activities as background tasks every few weeks to keep your PC running well.
