Vitamins are nutrients needed by the body to stay healthy and serve as protection against infections and diseases. There are different kinds of vitamins and they are grouped according to solubility. Fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E, and K. While water-soluble are vitamins C (ascorbic acid) and B complex. A vitamin having different forms but serves the same function or purpose in the body is called vitamers. Vitamin E is a good example of vitamers. It comprises two groups of chemical compounds, known as tocopherols (vitamers of vitamin E) and tocotrienols (a form of vitamin E). Actually there are four different types of tocopherols namely alpha, beta, delta, and gamma. But alpha-tocopherol is said to be the most biologically active of them all.

Vitamin E functions mainly as a natural antioxidant in the body. In order to perform its function well, it needs the help of vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin, and also selenium which is a mineral. Being one of the fat-soluble vitamins, it is carried through the blood by lipoproteins. If a person is deficient of this nutrient, red blood cells are prone to hemolysis. It is characterized by the destruction of red blood cells. According to studies, vitamin E is very helpful as prevention of hemolytic anemia among infants who were born as premature. Because of its antioxidant property, it may also boost the immune system to protect the body against any form of disease.

Researchers suggest that if the quantity of polyunsaturated fatty acids found in the diet increases, vitamin E requirement also increases. In order to acquire this nutrient, one must start looking for vitamin e sources. Since this can be found in dietary sources, vitamin e foods are not hard to find. Good sources of this nutrient are vegetable oils that are made from safflower, soybean, cottonseed, and corn. Another suggested best source of vitamin is margarine. It can also be found in green leafy vegetables and the best thing about is that even after it has been cooked, vitamin E is still intact. As for the fruits and animal foods, they are said to be poor sources of this vitamin.
