What to Wear to Destination Weddings

Posted on 01 April 2010

Off to a destination wedding? If so, then you need to dress appropriately to look elegant yet comfortable. Destination weddings are very different than traditional church weddings or even weddings held at hotels or country clubs. Destinations weddings are less formal and more relaxed. In fact, destination weddings are usually informal or casual celebrations that you don’t need to dress up or accessorize heavily. Sometimes, you can wear your comfortable cotton clothes and be off looking great to a fun destination wedding! Here are some guidelines to enjoy a destination wedding looking elegantly comfortable.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that apart from conventional weddings, destination weddings have a more relaxed, festive and simply fun atmosphere. This means that your clothes should have the same easygoing vibe, too. A black cocktail dress that has been your ultimate weapon through many weddings and other formal occasions simply won’t work this time. Colorful and more casual designs are more appropriate to match the tropical and relaxed atmosphere of the event.

Style is a critical factor to consider in a destination wedding. Avoid heavily embellished clothes that will not only weigh you down but will make you look overdressed and therefore awkward against the fun and festive atmosphere. Choose soft and thin fabrics that can withstand the heat of the sun feeling comfortable all throughout the ceremony. A white linen dress is perfect to achieve that comfortable elegance suitable in a relaxed destination wedding. Or imagine a classic seersucker shift dress. In fact, even cotton in a flirty strapless design in pink and lace is suitable enough to make you look pretty while feeling ultra comfortable.

Women’s linen dress is a perfect choice for less formal occasions like a destination wedding, as long as you’re okay with a little wrinkles. Fun and bright colors match the fun and festive mood of the ceremony. For a dressier affair, pair a linen shift dress with a matching fitted jacket for a more formal look. Accessorize with a hat or other appropriate accents to complete your look. Remember to have your linen dress pressed by your hotel though a day before the wedding to avoid looking too comfortable you end up looking like a total mess!

Wearing the appropriate accessories is important. Formal jewelry like diamonds look out of place in a casual event. Opt for more relaxed, beach-themed jewelry like shell, crystals and pearls for a more casual and fun feel. Complete your look with dressy flat sandals such as metallic gold or silver strappy sandals to add a spark of flair and drama to your whole ensemble. Keep your hairstyle simple. Pull it back into a simple ponytail or knot to keep your hair under control against the wind of an outdoor destination wedding. Keep everything simple but chic and you’ll have the grandest time of your life in perhaps the most fun and memorable wedding you’ve ever gone to.
